Biggest Problem: The keys

This was my first synth. Im a musician at a local church and used it mostly for organs, leads, and brass. The electric keyboards on it are really good, althugh the acoustic piano isnt what youd expect from Yamaha. Other than that, its a great secondary keyboard!

I posted a review back in November, 2003 about this synthesizer. Today, I still own it without giving a thought of parting with it. For the most part, I use it as a midi controller to my Roland JV-1010 that I bought back in 2002. That's not going anywhere either. Together they continue to make beautiful music. Even though I want a Motif (that I can't afford right now), the S03 and I have a special bond that will be for many years to come.

Good, not Great

I bought this keyboaard expecting too much, but that was my fault. Yamaha has really give you good value for this keyboard. At the price, there is no other synth that is as complex as this one. I must say I was not satisfied with the piano sounds, but I am really picky when it comes to those. I really enjoyed the electric keyboard sounds. If you take time to learn how to use this keyboard, it's well worth it. I hardly use any of the presets anymore, because the sounds I've made are pretty nice. If you are not a keyboardist, get this keyboard, there's nothing that would please you more for the money. If you are a keyboardist, get this keyboard, but don't get your hopes up too much. It's a nice keyboard for the money, the quality is excellent, and it works fine after I've dropped it multiple times. The biggest plus for me is how light this keyboard is. So all in all, Yamaha did a pretty good job.

I own the so3 first off all if you are a piano player the most important sound is the piano and the so3 lacks in acoustic piano sounds but on the other it has outstanding rhodes the best ive heard on a synth besides the motif and it has nice brass, reed, lead, strings, bass, the sound effects are good, and the synth sound are outstanding but the guitar sounds sucky it so hard to find a keyboard with good guitar sound i think korg has that on lock. It has goos velocity control and it has synth action keys. All in all this is a great top board. If you are a gigging musician don't play this by itself

Good Second Board

This board has been excellent for a second board. I play in the church and gospel musicians are often required to play the chords plus a strong bass line. The finger bass sound of this board is simply oustanding. My only two drawbacks are that the keys are not weighted and it has only 61 keys. Recommend going to the S08 if you are planning to use it as a primary board.
