The Nocturne N100 is contemporary-style console digital piano featuring a sleek, black cabinet that combines an elegant, modern design with hints of traditional grand piano styling. It has 88-key graded hammer-effect action, 3-level Dynamic Stereo Sampling, and an Advanced Wave Memory tone engine for authentic, richly textured grand piano sound and play. The Graded Hammer Effect (GH) keyboard provides authentic piano feel and naturally expressive response: keys are weighted more heavily in the lower octaves and become gradually lighter in the upper octaves, just like an acoustic grand piano.

Three piano-style foot pedals: soft, sostenuto, and damper (sustain) with special half-pedal effect, fluidly measures your motion of pedaling for an added sense of acoustic piano realism. The built-in 20W x 20W stereo amplifier and 4-speaker system provide the warmth of tone and volume perfectly suited for the home environment—no external sound system is required. It also provides exceptional ease of use and simple operation with backlit touch controls and MIDI IN/OUT ports for communicating with other instruments or computers via MIDI interface.

Escape the complicated world
In a complicated world where technology seems to overwhelm what used to be the simplest of tasks, the Nocturne Grand N100 is an oasis of simplicity and pure piano pleasure. The advanced digital technology is invisible, the sophisticated electronics transparent. What you see, hear, and play is a piano that is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. Drawing on vast experience with both acoustic and electronic instruments, Yamaha has captured the true essence of the grand piano, bringing all of the dynamic sounds and performance nuances of an actual 9-foot concert grand into a compact digital piano. The result is a truly classic instrument that becomes a natural extension of both your hands and your musical imagination.

The Actual sounds of a Concert Grand Piano
Yamaha continues its rich tradition of innovation by via the Nocturne N100 Digital Piano which comes with speakers conveniently tucked into the rear cabinet and pedal frame so it has a slim look top-to-bottom, despite its considerable depth. The result is a compact footprint that echoes the shape of a streamlined square-grand piano with an attractive black finish, slow-close fall board, and tasteful, soft-glowing, blue-lit control surface.

Sounds like a Grand to me

This is a wonderful substitute for an acoustic grand. In fact, I sold my 35-year old 5'10" grand to pay for it. The Yamaha feels like a grand piano and it sounds like a grand piano. My only complaint is that it is a trifle shakey; not solidly planted to the floor like an acoustic grand. There's no bells and whistles on the Yamaha -- but there are none on a real grand either.

I do not own this piano yet but have played with it in a music store on different occasions. I'm a tough critic, but when I sat down to play it for the first time I was blown away. If I had closed my eyes, I would have thought I was playing a grand piano! The sound and feel of the keys are the most realistic I have heard and felt. This will be my next piano definitely! It's also perfect for college students or those with limited space but still want quality, which both are true for myself. It's pricey, but it's worth it.

This is exactly what I wanted!

When reading this review understand that I am not a keyboard player. I've played bass for 25 years and wanted to switch to classical piano, maybe some jazz. Therefore I don't know what a keyboard player looks for in a keyboard. For me, I didn't need a thousand different sounds or a hundred different computer interfaces, I only wanted something that felt and sounded like a real piano. My Nocturne arrived yesterday and I can't stress enough how impressed I am. Listen to the last Glenn Gould recording of the Goldberg Variations and this piano sounds exactly like that. Plus the thing is just beautiful, to me it's visually stunning. It's pretty enough to keep in a main room rather than stuck away in the "music room". Also, it's very heavy, the shipping weight was 160lbs so I'm not sure if you could call it portable. The external body is metal not plastic, and the much of the internal structure is a very dense particle board. I gave the Nocturne a 7 for features because it only has 10 sounds which are all different keyboard sounds (which is 7 more than I need), no thunderclaps or wind or sounds and no percussion (which I don't care about either). So if you just want a piano you cannot go wrong with this instrument.
