This Keyboard has LOTS of classic yamaha sounds. It's like, every drum and synth in here you've heard a million times in your favorite songs. Good or bad? I dunno. This board feels solid. It's not all plastic. The top is metal. I was mad to discover you had to buy RAM to sample, and a memory card to save your compositions. So I had to shell out 200+ more bucks on top of the 2000 dollar asking price just to make a song. I sold a car to buy this. (because Stevie Wonder has one). I've made some nice beats from it. Don't be fooled by the HUGE ROM claim. This thing doesn't have that many sounds. There's no finger snaps, only a couple claps and most of the drums are for dance music. I make Hip Hop/Rap and i feel like I have to use the same sounds over and over again because there's so few that complement my style. The strings suck. They all sound the same and they are so thin. (Try Korg for great strings). The tweak knobs I find worthless. Who wants to take an OK sound and add stupid resonance so it pierces like a siren. Not me. The 808 sounds are good. The dance drums are good. The arpeggiator is pretty nice with over a thousand variations categorized for quick lookup, but... when you use the arpeggiator, this 'board slows down. It seems like it can't think fast enough to process the arp... info. You will press start on a loop and the arpeggiated track will start late and be off-time. I have had to abandone complex arrangements because this thing couldn't process the beat fast enough. The rappers already had verses ready! We were all pissed. I could go on about this board, good and bad but i prob. dont have enough room. Yamaha, get at me about making a better board.

Solid Keyboard

Its a good keyboard and is very popular for hip hop producers. It has great acoustics but lacks in the synth department. Navigation takes awhile to learn but you just need to read the manual. I think it get alot of hype because of the out of the box you dont need to do much effects wise because the sounds seem processed enough. The ES 6 is heavy for a 61 key board and vulnerable with its plastic exterior. If you want good out of box sounds get this, but if you like to do your drums on pads, sample, and have the ability to tweak your sounds Id look seriously at the Fantom.

Once you wander around the endless choices of sounds - that is only the beginning. This by far is the best station I have have the privelege to play. One cannot go wrong w/ this one. It will be around for years to come.

Yamaha Lives and Breathes Music

Yamaha, the company, must be run by musicians making instruments for musicians. They listen to music and know what live instruments sound like. Listen to the implementations of the instruments in the GM category. They all sound great. Not world class (as in some of Kurzweil's sound), but the best of all the other synths. Another thing I like about the Motif ES is that it is not intimidating. My kid could play this in 5 minutes. It's as easy as Garage Band. More fun too. I was getting worried about replacing my PSR-9000. Step aside old friend, welcome Motif ES to the family.

I'm new the game of producing and beat making and I felt it was important for me to have one of best pieces of equipment out on the market. After doing research, reading reviews, visiting music stores, and talking to owners of the Motif ES, Korg Triton, and Roland Fantom, I came to the conclusion that the Motif ES was the way to go. If you're a beat maker/producer I HIGHLY suggest this piece of equipment. Its a bit pricey, but it is worth every penny.

Right out the box I began to make quality music. Not to say I wasn't making good music before, but the equipment used had terrible sounds that simply didn't do my music justice. The Motif however has excellent sound selection and has something for everyone. I've used this instrument in a live setting and it worked wonderfully. The manual is slightly complicated, but www.motifator.com is a VERY helpful site that enables you to ask questions to professionals who know all of the inner workings of the motif. With the sounds, flexibility, quality, and tech support, the Motif cannot be beat!
