The AXON AX 50 USB is based on the same technology as its "big brother," but it has additional options, such as a USB port with four additional virtual MIDI ports, which makes it ideal for state-of-the-art, computer-based recording studios.

With its 32-bit RISC processor, the guitar to MIDI controller immediately translates the vibrations from each guitar string that you strike or strum and sends information about the pitch, dynamics and tone duration to the connected MIDI sound generator. The Ax 50 has been a good investment, although it took some time (and firmware updates) to get there. Make sure you download the newest firmware (currently 7.28) to get the machine up and running. I play mostly fingerstyle with either a GK-3 or Ghost piezos. The piezos track somewhat better, but if you have the GK-3 you can also get some decent tracking. You need a guitar with a wide bridge, because if the strings are close to each other you’ll get some sound errors with the GK-3. The situation is attenuated with the Ghost saddles, but there’s no such thing as perfect tracking yet. During a polyphonic passage you can expect a few wrong notes.

You need to take several days to set up the Ax 50, but this unit is definitely worth it. I only use it at home, to record my manuscripts and edit the MIDI files with notation software. You need to record slower to avoid wrong notes, and I get about 98% good tracking. This is much faster than entering the notes manually or with a keyboard.
