Totally Unusable

First problem is the white keys are louder than the black ones. Notes are triggered at sparatic volumes. This is not a calibration issue. I have the same problem running as an 88 key controller to a 61 key M3, to Ivory on a muse receptor, and to logic studio 8 on a macbook pro. White keys are louder on all systems. It also takes 3 seconds for the bank up/bank down signal to be transmitted to the receptors. The motifs and m3's do it instantly. To me this makes it completely worthless live. After encountering this problem, I went online and others seem to have this same problem. I do not trust these keyboards and will never buy another.

BE VERY CAREFUL when buying one of these. Like many other buyers, I did not become aware of this problem until a while after I'd purchased it, and it was too late to return it.

Realistic Feel and Performance

Pros. I am delighted with the quality and performance of the StudioLogic SL 990 XP keyboard. It replaced my 17-year-old Roland FP 8. Action. I noticed a big improvement in feel and heft. Action is substantial. Before buying the keyboard, I feared wimpy action like some other MIDI keyboards I tried. Expressiveness. I was surprised by the improvements in dynamic scope and expressiveness of this keyboard over the Roland. The StudioLogic keyboard provides more subtle control when I want it. Makes the overall system behave and sound like a nice grand piano. Cons. Twice, glitches with reverse poll of the sustain controller - usually at startup - easily fixed by cycling off/on. Satin finish on the black keys results in noticeable fingernail scraping noise while playing adjacent white keys. I recommend this keyboard for enthusiasts and pros who want a keyboard MIDI controller that feels and performs like a real piano. System. StudioLogic SL 99 XP, Roland JV1010. MAudio Studiophile speakers. Piano Experience. 36 years.

5,0 but watch out!

The first batch of SL990XPs could only transmit sustain pedal action on channel One. Fatar hoped that glitch would just be ignored and many did since they were using it for a piano module only and had no need to change channels. I'd check to see if the sustain pedal functions in all the channels.

44 pounds of junk

A month or two out of warranty, seven keys stopped transmitting. Repairs and shipping would be as much as the purchase price. The keyboard has never moved from my air-conditioned studio, and was used once or twice a month. Will not buy Fatar/Studiologic again.

Great Controller!

This controller does what it needs to do. It seems pretty sturdy and reliable-it's been great on the road so far. The action is stellar; it has great feel and response. It's far better than the CME 88-key controller. I gave generous ratings in all categories except features because this controller would be absolute if it had some knobs and faders. Getting past that, it is one of the best feeling full-sized keyboards I have ever played and owned. I use it to control Reason, I have had a really great experience using this as my main controller in my rig. Once again, everything rocks with this board. Not to mention the pricetag!
