I owned a Fatar Studio 88 for the last 14 years. I have always liked it. When I got my SL 880 Pro I was very happy. Made in Italy. They made a fine product then, and they make a fine product now. The hammer action is just like a quality grand piano. Don't buy this keyboard if you have weak hands. If you want a quality, true grand piano feel, with some fine controller fuctions this is a super keyboard!

Poor quality

I like the piano-like feel and zones/splits features of the SL-880Pro. The controls---14 red lights and 4 push-buttons---is antequated and require too many button presses to get the desired result.

I could have put up with the contol interface if the keyboard did not have so many defects.

I have now gone through two. Both have failed. The first keyboard sent incorrect MIDI note-on note-off messages when playing notes in quick succession at high velocity: you'd play 6 notes and it would send only 4. Also the controls stopped working after about about a weeks use.

I thought perhaps I had just gotten a lemon, so I ordered a replacement.

With the second keyboard, the MIDI messages were correct but the controls stopped working after about a week: all lights became stuck on.

I'm going to save up for a Yamaha S90 ES :-)

Avoid the Fatar

Do not buy this keyboard. I will tell you why:

I have been using it for 2 or 3 years. It served me well the first year and I got good use out of it for awhile. The action is pretty good for a cheaper keyboard, I have to say. It also is very solid and built well (the mechanical part that is).

What is not so great is the electronics. It is completely unreliable (after maybe 6 months to a year of heavy use). I don't know why, but the electronics seem to fail after awhile. Turning on the keyboard results in all the lights turning on, and the midi messages to freeze, and as a result, the keyboard becomes useless. The remedy? Turn on off on off on off on off on off. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. You will find yourself never turning the keyboard off, which was my case.

It would be a superb keyboard if it wasn't for this major flaw. Reliability is needed. It is a shame, because this is one of the few keyboards I really know of that offer no sounds, and can charge a cheaper price. I don't NEED a keyboard with sounds, and one of the reasons I chose this keyboard was because it wasn't bloated with unnecessary sounds. Oh well. I guess the moral of this review is to stick with a better known brand, such as yamaha.

Great for giggers and studio

This thing is terrific. Nice piano like action with a synth feel thrown in. Action is made by Phatar and its what my piano teacher gigs with. I use it in the studio mostly and I can control almost all aspects of my VSTi moog with its mulitbank midi control knobs. 2 midi outs make it perfect for multi instrumentalists. Only problem I have had so far is that I've had the play button stick underneath the case.

Real Piano Feel

Touch better than most upright piano, very close to a grand piano. Akward user interface. I wish it came with grand piano sound and organ slider. The edge of the keys are a little bit too sharp.
