I've used a lot of instruments to compose music and the Roland MC 909 Groovebox is by far the coolest!

I like it because you can create an entire instrumental track in just one digital machine. Record it, edit it, EQ it, mix it, compress it and then dump it to a laptop with the USB port.

Use it with a midi keyboard controller and let your imagination run wild!

I have mixed feelings about the MC909. A great strength of this machine are its preset patterns combined with its RPS function. This gives you the ability to mix basslines, drum tracks, and synth riffs from all patterns in the machine, including patterns that you produced yourself, thus creating brand new patterns. This is a serious tool for a performing D.J. The MC909 has so many buttons and knobs for changing analog settings on the fly, but the sweet thing is that what you can do on the fly you can also record into the MC909 sequencer. The MC909 is a great sounding device. Now,let's talk about the bad side to this beast. First, the sequencer has no punchin or punchout points which can be set. This is a major hinderince. This makes track development on the MC909 next to impossible. I have called Roland and they refuse to address this issue. I own and use 3 other sequencers, Roland MC50 Mk2, Ensoniq ASR10, and now a Roland FantomX6 and they all have record punchins available. I know that the MC909 has been discontinued will Roland please address this deplorable problem with a software update. P.S. Everybody cannot afford to just go out and buy a FantomX6. Roland fix the problem.

Not only do I push and try to sell the MC-909 (as well as the new MC-808) but I own both as well. It helps me run my shows as a very useful MIDI device. I likes the types of recording as well as the microscope editing to erase the flaws in your painting of music in real-time. Operates furiously through it's usage of the 128 control numbers while in a user-friendly environment and its visual display capability.

I have been an MC-505 user for about 6 years. I had my complaints about it and any other fellow 505 users know what im talking about. Somtimes the 505 sounded kind of flat and un-expresive. But the 909 is a whole new animal. Ive only had mine for a month so far and I can already tell that my music can be more polished, better qulity and easier to produce overall. The sounds on the 909 are terific. The thing sounds PHAT with a capital "P". I think trance produces will espcially appriciate the very good trance leads that come stock in the 909. The interface is good. Transfering and importing wavs from your computer is a big plus. The ram upgrade is cheap. If you love the 505 you'll love the 909 and if your a beginner theres no better place to start learning.

Has it's problems...beware hype

I love my MC909, but beware, it's not all it's promised to be. There are many bugs that Roland refuses to fix, instead they come out with crap like the MC808. The MV8000 is up to os 3.5, why can't I have a working MC909 that I paid 1400 US for? Please view/sign the Petition to Roland Corporation for a good OS for this inspired piece of equipment at PetitionOnline website (I can't post the url here because it violates "guidelines"). Basically, songmode is almost unusable because the patterns do not sustain into one another, you will have embarrassing and unprofessional dropouts between patterns. CC/Knob movements that are recorded in patterns on the current OS don't reset when the pattern restarts, very VERY ungood. Korg grooveboxes don't have this issue. There are many other potentially embarrassing problems, such as only one track muting or unmuting if you press both tracks 6 and 13. It's unacceptable that a major corporation like Roland would allow this on such an expensive piece of hardware.
