The most contemporary sounds and processing on earth.
New 128-Voice Sound Engine
Like the Fantom-X keyboards, the Roland Fantom-XR Sound Module is based on Roland's powerful new sound generator chip. This chip delivers maximum audio processing performance at a great price-including an expressive stereo 4-tone synthesis engine with 128-voice polyphony. The internal 128MB wave ROM includes quality-focused waveforms like Roland's amazing 88-key split piano (a multistage velocity-switched stereo sampled piano), lively new string ensembles, fat drum sounds and more - recorded using world-class studios and renowned engineers like Dan Blessinger (Martinsound). The internal wave ROM can be expanded up to 512MB using 6 optional SRX-Series expansions. No other module boasts this kind of sound library!
User Sampling and More
Out of the box, the Fantom-XR ships with a 16MB sample memory for loading WAV/AIFF files via USB or for recording your own sounds via the analog and digital inputs. A host of sample editing tools-including a Wave Edit screen, Chop function and realtime time-stretching-give you plenty of control over your samples. And by adding optional DIMM memory, you can load up to 528MB of audio into the Fantom-XR. Combined with a fully expanded wave ROM, that's over 1GB of sounds! Editor software will be bundled for detailed Patch editing and backing up data is easy using optional PC Cards (up to 1GB) or via USB.
Made for Sequencing
Even without an internal sequencer, the Fantom-XR's 128 voices and capacity for over 1GB of waveforms make it the perfect module for use with a computer or hardware sequencer. In fact, it boasts the same tight integration of audio and MIDI as its keyboard cousins, but with greater expandability. Just MIDI it up to your sequencer of choice and let the Fantom-XR automatically sync up all your audio loops to tempo using a high-quality realtime time-stretching algorithm. You can even record linear audio phrases and play them back from RAM like a digital recorder!
Studio-Quality Effects and Mastering Tools
The Fantom-XR boasts the same powerful effects processing found in the Fantom-X keyboards-including 3 multi-effects processors that can be freely configured, plus separate reverb and chorus processors. The multi-effects are extremely powerful with algorithms ranging from COSM Guitar Amp Modeling and Lo-Fi processing to tempo-synced delay, Slicer, Isolator, and more. A dedicated Mastering processor serves up tools like multiband compression to give your music a tighter, punchier sound.
The Simplicity of USB
The onboard USB port can be used as a USB-MIDI interface-perfect for sequencing the Fantom-XR from a computer. USB also makes for a great way to transfer audio files to and from the module-just connect a cable, then drag and drop away. The Fantom XR can import and export WAV and AIFF files, making it compatible with a wide variety of sounds available on CD-ROM and via the Internet. Give your music a serious sonic upgrade with the Fantom XR. ˙

This is a great roland synth module. I have owned the jv and xv series and this is the best. BUT as a sampler it is pretty useless. The sample edit software and interface of this unit and instructions are vague misleading and incomplete. Im a pretty advanced software and hardware user, but editing and SAVING multisamples are a big hassle and waste of time with the xr. If you want to play your own samples, pass on this unit and go for an Akai. This would get high marks for a sound module, but low mark for the sampler implementation and price.

Sounds etc, covered already. Here is the thing- Sampling. In 1 unit rack space!!!! If you have a computer and use extensive vst's live like I Do, you MAY know what its like to have your computer crap on you? well, get this and you can sample EVERYTHING (with a cheap memory upgrade), and you never have to worry again! Leave the computer at home guys! I hate they didn't ship it with more memory, but whatever... it's cheap enough.
As has been covered before, it's a tough learning curve, it's still tough for me, but when you figure it out it's really not that hard to actually do a task!
There are issues, the computer interface is cool, but you have go to the actual unit to save any changes, and edits to sounds made in performance mode WONT save (??????). This is something that others have pointed out in magazines and such, and it isn't really THAT big a deal... just... why???? Why allow you to edit there? whatever.
Anyway, someone steals this from me, i'm going after another. ANd another and another. This is the best purchase ive made in years, and is a SUPERB companion to an arsenal of VST's.... I can't rave enough about that... I really cant. With multisampling as easy as it is?? Man.... I no longer live in fear of my computer dying on me right before a gig!

This is a great unit. I have owned it for over a year now. I typically use it live driving it with a MIDI foot controller (ala Rush). I also use it in my home studio to flesh out demos for our band. I love it. I see a lot of comments about over used sounds, etc. The sounds on this thing are over the top and only other diehards are really going to hear the difference. The only issue is it doesn't want to work well with Windows Vista which eliminates my ability to edit graphically.

The stock piano sound on this is really impressive. If you can find a weighted 88 key controller that you like then you have almost an x8 for about half the price.

The module is very solid in contruction, well presented and, very important, very stable in operation. Now, the sounds are just OK, the EMU products have quite better sounds. The Fantom X editor doesn´t have the same graphical interface the Fantom X.. keyboards have, don´t understand why. It doesn´t save anything in the box, even the sample interface is .... uf, difficult. The synthesis method is OK, full of parameters that you shouldn´t need if the sample is good. So it sounds OK for prog rock, it sounds amazing for poor music.
