The Novation X-Station 49 MIDI Controller combines a first-class 49-key keyboard, killer sounds, MIDI control, a MIDI interface and mouthwatering effects, in a compact, portable controller that can be powered with USB or batteries.

The Novation X-Station employs a premium-class mechanism with semi-weighted keys and aftertouch. Even novice piano players will instantly feel the difference! Aftertouch, a joystick, and the assignable X/Y touch pad controller provide you with extra dimensions of expression for your performances.

Audio And MIDI Interfaces

Novation X-Station includes a fully featured audio interface with 2 phantom-powered, hi-quality converters, 2 Neutrik combined XLR and 1/4" inputs, digital S/PDIF out, and much more. The X-Station's dedicated headphone and monitoring connections with separate controls even allow you to work without a mixer. The onboard DSP effects processor provides instant, zero-latency multi-effects for monitoring or recording applications. Each of the Novation X-Station's audio channels has its own effects chain. You can even record audio with effects on one channel and use the synthesizer on the second at the same time!

On top of that, the X-Station has a MIDI Interface, allowing you to integrate external MIDI gear with your Novation keyboard controller.

Hardware Synthesizer

The fully featured hardware synthesizer also runs on the unique Novation X-Station hardware thanks to its powerful DSP processor! The X-Station's 3-oscillator virtual analog synthesizer is based on the renowned Novation KS-series and is 8-voice polyphonic. The extensive control interface provides instant access to all key parameters, making it ideal for live performances.

No cables are necessary as the synth is fully integrated: The stereo audio output is sent straight through the USB cable onto the track in your sequencer via ASIO!

DSP Effects

The Novation X-Station provides 2 channels of onboard multi-effects! Up to 6 effects may be used simultaneously on each channel. The palette includes chorus, delay, reverb, distortion, EQ, and even a compressor. The X-Station's effects can be routed for monitoring only (like giving the singer some reverb while recording) or for recording as well (for example, recording a guitar with chorus). Thanks to the Novation X-Station's unique design, synthesizer and effects for incoming audio can even be used at the same time!

Direct Remote Control

Want a first class remote control for sequencer functions? Need a hardware surface for your VST-Instruments? Would you like to remotely control other hardware from one surface? The X-Station provides the solution - no matter if you want to remote control your Access Virus or Propellerhead Reason.

The Novation X-Station offers a total of 55 assignable physical controls, including 3 encoders, 16 pots, 9 sliders, and 22 buttons. And that doesn't include the dedicated controls in the audio section. A template can have up to a massive 150 virtual controls in total using the shift functions!

Tired Of Wires?

The X-Station only needs one for everything - the USB cable. That's it. Even power is provided via USB or batteries whenever desired! So if you really want to make your recordings on the beach - take your laptop, Novation X-Station keyboard MIDI controller and enjoy the sun as inspiration. But don't say we didn't warn you about the sunburn and the sand all over your gear!

Amazing unit, REALLY

First of all, the actual keyboard on this thing is wonderful. TIGHT and responsive. Better than any board in it's price range by far. I just bought something else and it's plastic, floppy construction was SO bad, that a few notes didn't play properly right out of the box. The sounds here are very good, the interface is convenient, and the features are unmatched by anything I've seen at this price-point. Last night I did a little live/electronica gig. I was playing synth stuff, and for fun I plugged the singer's vocal mic through my X Station so that I could add compression, echo, reverb, etc. and control it from the stage (instead of letting the soundman guess). It worked flawlessly.

The whole gig was made so much easier by having this thing.

At one point, someone tripped over some cords on stage, and the X Station fell 3 feet to a STONE FLOOR. I repatched it and it worked perfectly. A happy end to a scary moment.

Aside from all the other stuff you'll read about this from Novation, it's just really well designed and built.

Nice little keyboard

I bought mine used and it had been banged up quite a bit.

The keybed action is fantastic. The aftertouch on mine was broken when I got it, apparently somebody disassembled it and did not bother to route the bit of strip between the aftertouch sensor and the circuit board properly and it was all bunched up, causing the problem. I fixed that in a few minutes. Looking inside it the construction is very cheap, and it could use some reinforcing with a hot glue gun around the XY pad and the area where the mod wheel spring switch attaches to the bottom. Besides that, the sounds are amazing for a second gen VA keyboard, though if you know where to look for imperfections you can find them (modulating a filter really fast with an LFO does not sound like it would on a real analog and there is a hair of alias at high pitches, also sometimes and with only some patches, you can hear a click when a note starts, not sure if it is part of how it does voice stealing... bad bad programmer, usually you only see that in betas of soft synths. Besides that it still sounds pretty killer IMO, don't let that deter you.

The all in one-ness of this keyboard is the killer feature. It runs bus powered or on batteries. and it is light. It even recharges batteries as you use it with USB or AC adapter. It is my #1 keyboard for just spontaneously jamming with friends with or without a computer.

Audio latency is fantastic despite the use of USB 1.1 (I am running at 7ms output and 5ms input) and all computer interfacing is glitch free and straight forward. With only a few exceptions, pretty much every feature is accessible right on the front panel.

Highly recommended.

A world class midi controller

When I first heard about the all-in-one thing, I wasn't really impressed. The reviewers were the ones that convinced me about using the X-Station for my mics, sounds; everything that I needed for a mobile studio or home studio. Once I plugged this baby into my computer and ran it with Reason and Ableton Live 6, and in addition plugged in my MXL mic, and an AKG Perception 200 everything ran so smoothly. Except a few minor adjustments with Live's input preferences, this machine rocks. Even its sounds are really, really good. The mic pre is also, to me quite good. The only small issue is the modulator XY pad on the lower left of the keyboard that is a little cheapie somewhat. But even that works well. Plug it in, get the new drivers online from Novation's site, and in no time you are up and ready to sound like a pro. YEAH FOR NOVATION, YOU GUYS have done a great job with this baby. And also, I'd get the 49 keys because it really helps to play. The X-Station49 is big and small enough to be carried around yet it delivers smooth key action that makes me wanna play out my compositions.

Great VA synth value.

Had to sell my Nord Lead2 to buy new guitar, then came across this... and it replaced NL2 for me just fine. It's a simple VA synth, keyboard action isn't bad, better then Nord actually, interface isn't as good, as you have to switch between the ocsillators, sound engine is the same as K-Station, x/y pad is a nice feature, but it sucks, not sesitive enough to the point of being almost useless. Sound is nice, generally excellent value. The downside is cheap chinese assembly. Can be also used as 2in usb audio interface with phantom power or even fx unit, as you can run audio through its fx processor. Presets are good, more great ones can be found on Novation website. In my opinion this beats microKorg and ms2000 if you don't need a vocoder. Try it!
