Excellent play and sound in a 17-lb. piano you can carry under one arm!
At just 17 lbs., the M-Audio ProKeys 88sx digital stage piano delivers excellent sound in a package so light that you can carry it under one arm.
Its essential complement of instruments including grand piano, electric pianos, organ, and clav sound unbelievably good for an instrument in this price range. The piano's semi-weighted action also delivers the best feel you can get without the added cost and weight of hammer action.
While many digital stage pianos cram as many as 128 instruments into limited space, the ProKeys 88sx dedicates all of its memory to 7 high-quality sounds devoting extra attention to the multi-layer stereo samples of a Yamaha C7 concert grand. Piano 2 is designed to really cut through in popular music. Electric pianos are covered too, including a bright classic Yamaha DX7, a sweet Fender Rhodes, and a vintage Wurlitzer. There's also a percussive Hammond B3-and the Clavinet has "funky" totally nailed. Add on-board reverb and chorus to customize your sound.
Two stereo headphone jacks are perfect for private practice or teaching. The USB MIDI interface lets you record and playback on your Mac or PC without the installation of extra drivers.
The 88sx is also loaded with performance controls often not found on stage pianos including pitch and mod wheels plus inputs for two footswitches and an expression pedal.
If you want a pristine-sounding digital stage piano that feels great to both your fingers and your back, the ProKeys 88sx is for you.

We are professional classical musicians near NYC, and need something to take on weddings, etc, because our own big Steinway does not fit in the Subaru. (!) Over the years, we have thrown out our backs carrying big old Rolands, and bought this because it has 88 keys, good-enough-for-the-gig sounds, and weighs SEVENTEEN POUNDS!! No, this is not super-sturdy, but it has never suffered ANY injuries in the time (well over a year - closer to 2) that we have owned it - and yes, we carry it in a good bag. I wish the electrical connection was better made (thin wire, transformer box)and some of the sounds *I* will never use - and you do have to remember your preferences in settings. But for the size, weight, and price - it has printed money for us. We take work now that we used to refuse, because this is such an easy carry - with a good rack and all the sound stuff we schlep, too. I recommend this OFTEN to students who need a keyboard to learn on, and want to take out with their band.

Decent Practice Keyboard and MIDI Controller

This is a pretty good practice keyboard, and I am having a lot of fun with it. I just put on some headphones, turn it on, switch it to Piano 1 and hack away.
This works great with Cakewalk Sonar and my VSTis. I just start up my laptop, plug the keyboard into the USB port, attach my headphones into the audio interface, start up a good grand piano or synth VSTi and I'm in heaven.
The only knocks on this keyboard so far for me is that the other six Piano sounds are really horrible. Immediate turn-off. Also, the default sound when you turn it on doesn't sound great; you have to tap and fiddle with the Reverb, Chorus, and Vel. Curve buttons each time you turn it on.
So in other words, don't buy this unless you intend to use it as a MIDI controller, where it really shines.

Great sounds and feel, but poorly built.

The sounds on this board are incredible for the price, and the feel of the semi weighted keys are fantastic. The rhodes and wurly sounds are great, but the velocity switching can be annoying. The pianos are also fantastic, and are definitely passable to your average unmusical audience. The biggest low point soundwise of this board is definitely the organ, I own a real hammond organ, and the organ on this sounds nothing like it.
I really like this board, but its very poorly built. I have had it for only one month, and I am going to have to send it back to M-audio already for repairs. So far, after normal use, nothing too vigorous, bout of the outputs in the back have stopped putting out a sound, so I need to use the headphone out in to my amp. The sostenuto input also stopped functioning, but I never use that so no big deal. The biggest problem so far though is that it will randomly switch off and on, getting rid of the current settings I'm using. I'm not sure if this is the adapter or the board itself, but its very irritating.
Overall, this board sounds great, but is poorly made (at least mine). I still suggest it, and I hope you have better luck with the quality of yours.

Something Startling!

I don't know what the previous reviewer meant by "not roadworthy". I've played most of the boards this emulates on stage and, if anything, it is much less finicky. The fact that it ways 17 pounds makes it almost too light. Either secure it to the stand or watch out on glissandos! Sure, you can't hit softballs with this board, but that is not its job. I think it offers stunning emulations of pianos, electric pianos, clav and organ. Get a gigbag!
This board is something startling however. It puts music in the hands of people who play keyboards. Guitarists could always afford a guitar, but keyboards were always at least 5 times the cost. With the ProKeys 88sx, you get a light, inexpensive keyboard with 1/4" outputs (similar boards don't have 1/4" outs) with the amazing sounds necessary for of pop, rock & jazz.
It isn't perfect, but it's pretty close. I continue to struggle with the velocity curves after 6 months, but a keyboard with these sounds for that price? Amazing!

This is a great little keyboard. The keys are a little close, but it has a good feel and sound and is easy transport.
