A Great Keyboard Value!

I am a working musician that uses my keyboards a lot. We play about 200-220 shows a year. When my trusty Ensoniq SQ-80 had seen better days I started shopping for a new keyboard. I have owned Yamaha keyboards and pianos, but I saw the Kurzweil SP88X in a catalog and liked the way it looked, a short time later we were on vacation and I saw a band play, the keyman was using this keyboard for his piano stuff. I loved the sound and the feel of the keyboard. So I bought one and I have been using it 4 nights a week for a year and I even dropped it once and the thing just keeps on going.I love the weight of the keys and the piano sounds are great the organs leave a little to be desired but I use a synth for that anyway. You could get a better board but you will pay a lot more. All in all a great keyboard at a great price. For a working musician that means the world.

A Capable Keyboard

I bought this to replace my aging Yamaha P-80. I find the pianos to be very good, and that they "punch through" the mix better than the Yamahas. The organs are OK, but it lacks a church organ of any kind so that's a minus. Most of my gigs are Motown and Jazz, but I do play in church occasionally. The MIDI controller side is very useful and has it all over the Yamaha P-series (they have none to speak of). The set-up interface is a bit unwieldy to use - the LED/pushbutton select system can be frustrating. (For this price we can't have a proper alpha-numeric display with more than three characters?!!!). The action is hammer "style", but definitely lighter than the Yamaha. This is good and bad - I love digging in to the Yamaha keybed when playing piano, but it's a bit awkward when using the Hammond sounds. Kurzweil has found a happy median with its lighter touch keys. It's a compromise, but unless you want to carry 8 keyboards to your gig, you have to compromise somewhere. I'm not *crazy* about this board, but I don't NOT like it - that's saying something because I'm usually pretty opinionated about keyboards. I gig about 80 nights a year, so I'll be spending a lot of time with this board. We'll see if it stands up to abuse. This is a very competent keyboard at a good price. If you want better action, different sounds, or other features, go spend more money. I don't believe there's a better board out there for this money.

Good features, bad sound

I use this keyboard on wednesday nights for our youth group services. I like the features on it, it is very user friendly and well suited for live use. I also like the feel of it compared to the Triton extreme in the main sanctuary. However, the sounds are lackluster. The piano sounds like a toy and the synth pad is dated (which if your gonna play pads you need a REAL synth anyways). Those are the downfalls of this board. If you want a great realistic sounding keyboard buy a Yamaha.

Great Sounding Keyboard and Great Price

If you're looking for the nice Kurzweil piano sound without paying dearly for the higher end midi controller versions, this is the keyboard for you. I have one in my recording studio, one at my church, and have recommended it to many others. All I needed was a nice grand, strings, electric, and some organ, and you get it with the SP-88x. I am of the opinion that the kurzweil piano sound it more realistic than most out there and I obviously prefer it over the rest. I'm sure if you spend a few thousand you can get another that equals or is a little better, but its not worth the money. I get compliments on the keyboard sound from my recordings a lot and everyone is surprised when I tell them what I used. Some complain about the weighted key hammers going bad, but I haven't had any trouble. If you're one of those that hit the keys extremely hard you will have troubles with any weighted keys eventually. If your like me and only play moderately then you will not have trouble. I've owned this keyboard for 3 years no problems.
