Beat creation, MIDI sequencing, and live performance control are all possible with Akai's MPK49 USB/MIDI controller. Featuring a sleek black design, this 49-key, semi-weighted keyboard with aftertouch comes with 12 MPC-style drum pads with 4 pad banks each for a total of 48 total pads.

The pads have swing parameters that can be applied to the MPC Note Repeat function and the MPK49 keyboard's own arpeggiator for instant creation of ear-catching riff effects. They also feature the MPC-style Full Level and 12 Level velocity functions.

Included in the array of assignable controls are 8 full-sized, 360-degree rotation pots, 8 full-sized sliders, and 8 backlit switches. All of them come with 3 banks, giving you a total of 24 pots, 24 sliders, and 24 switches to play with. Amongst the other assignable inputs are an expression pedal, footswitch, pitch bend, and modulation wheel. The MPK49 MIDI keyboard controller also has Tap Tempo and time-division buttons allow for realtime control of Note Repeat and Arpeggio clock speeds.

The large, custom LCD display makes it easy to see what you're working with, whether in the dark atmosphere of a nightclub or in the comfy confines of the studio.

Other reviewer is incorrect

I just got this two days ago and want to point out that the other reviewer is incorrect. The pad settings are just for the pads, not the keys.

Learning how to program this is a bit confusing, but here is the gem on what I have found so far.

Don't try to edit everything in the globals, nor the presets, it doesn't work that way. Inside your preset, if you want to edit something, play a key, pad, move a slider, encoder, or transport button... THEN, click the edit key. Now you have access to the parameters to edit. Editing the pads sensitivity to 16, curve to what you like and threshold to 1 gives you more mpc feel. Threshold to 1 guys.

The keys don't use the pad settings. You have aftertouch, velocity, and octave.

Also set the gate on your pads using the note repeat button, then edit. Lower the gate to get drum rolls etc.

Seems a little counter intuitive at first, but makes sense once you understand it. A better manual is my only negative on this.

This thing sucks!!!

This will be short and sweet...

The problem with this keyboard is that the so-called drum pads are horrible, the limited ability to adjust the sensitivity, curve, and threshold of said pads is even worse - the worst I have seen. And here is the final straw: The lousy curve, sensitivity, and threshold attached to the drum pads cannot be adjusted without adjusting the same parameters for the keyboard. That's correct - you read it right: if you adjust anything on those 3 parameters for one, it adjusts the other, also.

That sums it up. Akai took what appears to be a very solid, versatile product and destroyed it by being cheap, and not thinking it out. Lousy pads, lousy control of the pads, and lousy logic. Mine is going back today!!!

MPK49 is a good buy

I purchased this some time back and for the most part have been very satisfied with it. This is my first MIDI keyboard. I use this mainly with Reason 3.0. Setting this up on your computer might give you a bit of a headache. I'm still learning some things. The presets are a work in progress for me. I tried them on Reason and the Reason preset did not match with Reason directly; so, you will have to map the settings on Reason to the MPK49. The MPC pads are kind of unnecessary; but, I suppose it's better to have them just in case. The LCD light stays on if you keep it plugged in the USB port after turning the computer off. Overall, the Akai MPK49 is worth it for the price. I would recommend it to beginners because I still consider myself a beginner and this keyboard will last for quite a few years.

All the gizmos...

I've been using mine for 6 weeks now and I'm very happy with this board. It does everything you can think of and some things you've never dreamed of. However, getting it to do what you want does require putting in the time and getting over the learning curve: don't expect to just plug and play. Once you get the hang of it though, tweaking the operation and creating your own templates is quite simple. Synth action keys feel great, and I have to agree with some of the other reviews: it has a quality feel to the keys and the controls. I'm not fond of the pads but I'm used to a Trigger Finger so these feel more like rubberized switches to me than true pads. Also could have been better if they added an on/off switch, right now the only way to turn it off is to unplug the USB cable or shut down the computer. Still, a great board with tons of possibilities.

Now Ive had this for about a month now. I have to say first this is build Solid and you can feel it. This is also the most infinitely possible programmable midi controllers. Which is good if you know what you are doing. well this is my first piece of midi and I know NOTHING except what I am learning now from having this. Also I have Tracktion which doesnt recognize this so I have to do it round-a-bout. If you have reason or ableton or something more geared toward the midi realm you plug in play with the presets. I still have not been able to use half the stuff on here yet. OVER ALL:its a great buy, but the approach is confusing.
