An advanced keyboard, synth, and production instrument for the modern musician. |
The Access Virus TI offers the freedom of software synthesis, the power of computer connectivity, and independent hardware portability and control. It has 61 semi-weighted keys with velocity sensitivity and aftertouch. The dual DSP engine serves up 512 RAM and 2048 ROM patches with 80-stereo-voice polyphony (average) as well as a powerful array of oscillators, filters, LFOs, envelopes, and effects. You also get a per-patch programmable arpeggiator and studio-grade 24-bit/192kHz audio conversion. The Virus TI Keyboard links to your computer with VirusControl, a companion software product which ports the hardware synth into a host sequencer for use as a sample-accurate VST/AU instrument, simultaneously offering 2-way audio and MIDI connectivity, control surface functionality, editor and librarian functions, and more.
Totally Integrated Synthesizer
A scalable USB link connects the Virus to a Mac or PC for total integration of synth and studio. The VirusControl plug-in automatically detects and connects the synth, ensuring a hassle-free configuration every time.
From inside a host application, the plug-in enables the Virus hardware to appear as a multichannel VST/AU soft-synth with up to 4 sub-mixes (or 2 ž stereo). Access' proprietary driver technology makes Virus TI the world's first hardware synthesizer with sample-accuracy timing and a delay-compensated audio/MIDI connection.
Seamless interconnectivity also provides a real benefit in the software sequencer environment. All multi-timbral sounds and settings used for a project are stored within it with the plug-in, for snapshot total recall, plus editor and librarian functions with no SysEx or 3rd party software hassles.
The Virus hardware is also well-equipped to capitalize on the power of Total Integration. With 24-bit/192KHz balanced analog, S/PDIF I/O and MIDI in and out ports, the new Virus is well-suited for use as the main audio and MIDI I/O center for your entire rig. These functions are especially practical for the laptop studio, offering an unmatched range of features and capabilities from one product.
Additionally, a Remote Mode allows the Virus hardware to become a control surface for any MIDI-capable device or software, mapping each of the 33 knobs to a specific MIDI message. TI ships with a great selection of templates and includes 32-user memories for custom controller maps. It's a powerful addition that greatly increases the value of the synth's studio footprint.
The Legendary Sound of Access: Evolved
For Total Integration the power and performance of the synth engine have been taken to new extremes thanks to a newly optimized core which delivers unprecedented performance. For starters, polyphony is more than doubled, to 80 voices under average conditions.
Alongside the award-winning Virus oscillator models, two completely new types have been added. First is the real Wavetable oscillator model. This unique algorithm can blend waves to create evolving motion or switch between them to create gritty lo-fi textures.
The amazing HyperSaw model can generate up to 9x the number of saws without using 9x the required polyphony. In fact, its polyphony is comparable to that of a single voice saw oscillator. With 2 Oscillators, each playing 9 main plus 9 subs (36 oscillators per key), you can still enable Unison mode and get impressive polyphonic results. In one test, we calculated over 2000 simultaneous saws! Now imagine all this, through Access' award winning filters, including MiniMoog cascade emulation, shaping raw, pulsating WaveTables or insanely fat HyperSaws. With these features, the Virus has never done more or sounded better.
The Mod Matrix has also been expanded to 6 sources with three destinations each (18 routings total) for greater real-time control and patch programming freedom. The new Knob Quantize Mode syncs the effect of real-time or sequenced parameter changes to a pre-selected clock interval. Changes are updated on the selected pulse and held until the next, resulting in staggered parameter movements like those produced by a step sequencer.
New and existing Virus owners will love the addition of a programmable arpeggiator! Users can create and store their own rhythmic pattern in every patch.
Enhanced with adbanced power and resources, Multi Mode embeds 16 patches for self-contained sounds you can tweak and transform without overwriting your singles or affecting other Multi programs. Use it to build impressive layers, splits, or poly-arps for performance or recording. A mode for use with sequencers is also provided, emulating the classic Multi which loads sounds from within the single banks.
In either case, the complete sound engine is always available to each Multi part, including dedicated delay and separate reverb fx for all 16 sounds. In effect, the full Virus TI single modes is replicated 16 times!
Optimization from the Ground Up
Besides adding great convergence and synth engine features, Total Integration is built around a major hardware platform upgrade, sporting a complete redesign inside and out.
A large white graphic display shows multiple parameters at the same time which can be edited using three Soft Knobs. Keyboard models feature an illuminated logo on the I/O panel (it looks great, and even pulses in sync with the tempo for other musicians or the audience to enjoy).
Also new in the hardware, a Tap Tempo button helps live Virus musicians stay in sync with drummers and turntablists using a sophisticated algorithm based on Access' SyncXtreme technology.
How is it all possible?
Inside, a Dual-DSP core delivers stellar performance with super-low latency. TI also employs studio-grade converters with 192 Khz/24-bit D/A. These are paired with +4 dB balanced inputs and outputs and a switchable soft limiting algorithm, and accompanied by S/PDIF digital stereo output and input as well. The onboard USB port is compatible with USB 2 specifications and works with USB and Hi-Speed USB devices and peripherals. For easy access to all these new jacks, the entire I/O panel of the TI desktop model can be rotated 90 degrees so the interface is on the rear panel. The 4U Rack mounting kit is also included with the desktop model.
Last but certainly not least, the onboard memory has been drastically expanded: 512 RAM patches and 2048 (rewritable) ROM patches plus space for 16 self-contained Multi Mode programs described above.

Fly in the ointment

The Virus TI could have been one of the all time greats. I say could have been because there is a fly in the ointment – or more precisely a bug in the system. The TI community has been waiting (for years now) for Access to fix this problem. But Access Music hasn’t fixed the problem, and at this point it looks like they’re not going to. The other reviewer is correct - clicks, pops and screeches which are as loud (or louder) than the synth itself. Too bad Access can’t get it right – in the meantime those of us who shelled out $3 grand (myself included) are stuck with a lemon. I am not the only one with these problems – other TI owners are posting complaints about the same snap, crackle, pop on various Virus TI Forums - check it out. I have spoken directly with Access tech dept (more than once) and they readily admit there is “an issue” with clicks and pops on the TI. The really bad news is that the more you tweak your sounds for phatness, the worse the problem of random noise becomes. At this point (going on two years!), I’m ready to give up and go with Clavia or Moog. I am sick and tired of having a $2800 synth sit in the closet because I can’t use it. No matter how good something sounds, if it continually belches, craclkes and pfffts in the middle of your performance (and your recordings) you’ll be sorry you bought it. Like the other reviewer said – Do NOT buy a TI until Access fixes the snap, crackle, pop problem.

Fantastic Digital Synth

The Access Virus TI 61 key analog modeling synthesizer is probably the best digital synth yet. It was designed and made in Germany! European made synths are just better, that's all there is to it. They sound different, they feel different, almost like boutique instruments. I also own Nord Lead (made in Sweden) and General Music Equinox (made in Italy). European synths are like comparing Mercedez Benz's to Toyota or Chevrolet. The Virus TI has exceptional analog modeled sound. It does not sound raw and gritty like an old Juno 106, but has more of a glassy and transparent sound, almost like playing a Korg Triton. But remember, the Virus is an "analog modeler", and it can do more than any 80's analog synth out there. Yes, it can reproduce your common saw, square, and triangle waveforms, but when you hear the "other" sounds it can make, like it's trademark "Hypersaw" wave, (many saw and square ocillators stacked together), and it's many beautiful digital waves,(the Virus can sound like a Hammond B3 or a grand piano, with these), you will be amazed. But what impressed me most about the Virus is it's ability to sound like a genuine Moog. This is made possible by it's "ladder emulation filter", unique to any other synth I've played! You can get those great Moog bass lines and spitting lead sounds, whenever you want, even in polyphonic if you like. And you can enhance them with reverb, delay, chorus, flange, phase, or overdrive, thanks to the Virus's onboard dsp effects processor, and also it's built-in equalizer. There is even a great sounding arpegiattor which can be edited. The Virus TI has no sequencer, but it can stack parts and do keyboard splits with it's "multi-mode" function. It cannot do vocoding either by plugging a mic into it, but it can make many formant vowel sounds, which sound like vocoding. The synth also has a usb output, for those who want to use it with computer control. But this is not your common usb out. Access calls it "Total Integration" (that's what the TI stands for) and this gives the Virus the ability to be used as a software midi controller within itself. In other words, you can play the Virus on your computer after you load the included CD rom disc, using the Virus as your midi controller, and the Virus software will not strain your computer's processor one bit! (all processing is done within the synthesizer itself, and so it leaves your computer's processor free for your other programs. So you can record your Virus tracks into Pro-Tools, Reason, or whatever software you use, without worrying about your cpu's processing power. And on the back of the Virus are many analog ins and outs and common midi jacks if you want to patch it to other sources. I don't know what they are for though. The only thing I know about patching synthesizers, is left and right outputs into a mixing board and nothing else. The synth is well made and assembled. It is heavy. It has some "guts" inside it. The knobs are tight and responsive, no endless dials data encoders. The only feature I don't like are the tiny characters on the small lcd screen. That's probably why they named it "Virus". There are many buttons on the control panel which do many different things. The synth is not difficult to learn, but you will have to read the manual. Access technical support is not bad, you e-mail them in Germany, and in about three days a USA rep, will get back to you. And the operating system upgrades, along with many new patch banks can be downloaded from the Access website. But I did not have to worry about not having enough sounds. Eighteen banks, each containing 128 programs of factory presets are already installed in the Virus TI. That's almost 3000 sounds! And they are all user editable. The Virus TI is a unique and fantastic digital synth. The big lighted flashing "Access" logo on the back of it will make others take notice that you are playing an uncommon and amazing synth. You will not want your friends' grubby little hands to touch your Virus TI.

I own this synth. Well.......this is the best sounding synth...in my opinion..the WORLD! Too bad Access can't get it right. Clicks, pops, screaches.....loads in very few sequencers perfectly. Over $2,000 and it behaves like a software synth. Do not buy until Access gets it right!!!!
